IceCube is a neutrino observatory located at the South Pole, operated by the University of Wisconsin–Madison. It consists of a neutrino detector buried in the ice, with over 5,000 sensors extended over a cubic kilometer of Antarctic ice. The goal of the detector is to detect and study neutrinos, which are subatomic particles that can reveal information about some of the most extreme and energetic events in the universe, such as supernovae, black holes, and gamma ray bursts. IceCube has detected tens of thousands of neutrinos since it began operating in 2010, including some of the most high-energy neutrinos ever observed. The observations made by IceCube have shed light on some of the mysteries of the universe, including the origin of cosmic rays and the behavior of matter in extreme environments.
